Default HELP My tortoise just laid an egg

I have no idea what to do. I just looked into my tortoise enclosure
and voila, Zukerka (the female) laid an egg! I don't know what to do,
don't have any equipment, and am not sure that any stores are open
right now... What do I need to get/buy, and what should I do today if
I can't get to the store?
Thanks a lot in advance. I am trying not to panic.

Default HELP My tortoise just laid an egg

Hi Renee
Congratulations !!!!

First...don't panic

Mark the up side with an "x" .

Get a food storage container and fill it about half way with shredded
paper towles. Add a little bit of water so its damp but not wet. Set
the egg on it and loosly put the cover on. Keep it in a warm spot (on
top of the refrigerator works)

Default HELP My tortoise just laid an egg

Joe - many thanks! Before I read your message I had to remove the egg
(afraid that the tortoise would trample it, she seems very restless)
and I put the egg into a tupperware container, but sideways. It was
like that for less than 10 minutes. Once I've read your message, I
have deposited the egg into a container as you described, the correct
side up. Do you think I might have harmed the egg? (sorry for being so
paranoid, this is a first for me...)

Do you think she is likely to lay more eggs? She seems restless...
Does she have to lay them one after the other, or can there be some
interval between the eggs?

Another question: we are going to move in about a month. Is it OK to
move the incubator? If not, I will probably ask a friend to set the
incubator up in their house (I'm going to purchase one tomorrow).

Thanks!!!
Renee

If the egg is fertile it should be fine. Did the same with my
first...and it hatched

Very possible. How deep is the substrate and what type?

as long as the egg isn't handled roughly a move will be ok.

How do I know it's fertile? There was a lot of mating behavior earlier
in Spring, but I wasn't sure if they actually mated (my female
tortoise is larger and more aggressive than the male, and didn't
welcome his advances). She didn't lay any eggs in previous years (we
had her since she was about 4" old, that was almost 4 years ago).

It is a mixture of sand and bed-a-beast, and it is not very deep
(under 2").

Thanks!

Often the first clutches aren't fertile. It can be hard to tell. There
are some pictures here:

I incubate all eggs. Some that I was sure were duds....hatched.

The substrate should be 4-6" deep for nesting
